I was a the point off of Cité Du Havre a couple of times last week. I went without worms, eager to use "real" lures. After a couple of wobbler/worms outings for speckled trout this summer in Mastigouche, I just wanted nothing to do with worms/crawlers for a while, so I threw everything else at them: top water, diving, and sinking crank baits; jigs with grubs/tubes/powerbait minnows; spinners; spoons; wobblers; the only thing I didn't have with me were spinner baits, which I'll try next time. I had one smallmouth strike my black/grey jointed Rapala, at about 7AM, but she spat it out when I attempted to set the hook.
I just had a flash of "Eaaaaasy there, big fella", a la George Costanza.
Of course the only fish I saw that morning were caught by some of the regulars from Chinatown: 2 nice smallies, and yes, on worms (Worm balls, even).

I'm assuming the fish should be more active soon, since the weather has gotten quite a bit colder this week. I'm looking forward to playing with some crankbaits/tubes, etc of the point at Parc Cité Du Havre. I'm not so turned on by waiting for relatively inactive bass to swim by and suck in crawlers jammed to the river bottom with a brick of lead.
Do you prefer lures to live bait? Do you have any advice for like-minded anglers fishing from shore when the fish are less active? Comments appreciated!
